Amends Section 97-37-5 of Mississippi Code to allow persons convicted of nonviolent felonies to possess and use firearms and deadly weapons (bowie knives, dirk knives, butcher knives, switchblade knives, metallic knuckles, blackjacks, mufflers, or silencers) for defense of their residence or motor vehicle.

Requires that the person prove they reside in the home or own the motor vehicle where the firearm or weapon is located to qualify for this exception.

Maintains existing prohibitions on firearm and weapon possession for those convicted of violent felonies unless they receive a pardon, federal relief from disability, or a state certificate of rehabilitation.

Violations remain a felony punishable by a fine up to $5,000 and/or 1-10 years imprisonment in the State Department of Corrections.

Takes effect July 1, 2024.
