Criminalizes the removal or assisted removal of street, road, or highway signs as a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $1,000 per offense, or as a felony with imprisonment up to 5 years and fines up to $10,000 if the aggregate value exceeds $1,000 but is less than $5,000.

Amends Section 97-17-71 of the Mississippi Code to prohibit scrap metal dealers from purchasing street, road, or highway signs unless purchased directly from the state, a political subdivision, a municipal utility, or the manufacturer.

Requires scrap metal dealers purchasing prohibited metal property in bulk to notify law enforcement within 24 hours if such property is discovered in the bulk purchase.

Establishes tiered felony penalties for violations involving metal property thefts exceeding $5,000, with sentences ranging from 1-20 years imprisonment and fines up to $20,000 depending on the aggregate amount involved.

Effective date: July 1, 2024.
