MS SB2006

Amends Mississippi Code Section 23-15-851 to define eight occurrences that constitute a vacancy in either house of the Legislature: death, resignation, impeachment, loss of voter registration in the district, loss of residence in the district, felony conviction or violation of official oath, refusal to take oath of office, or court declaration voiding the election.

Requires the Governor to issue writs of election within thirty days after a vacancy occurs, with the election held at least sixty days after notice and a fifty-day qualifying deadline for candidates.

Allows the Governor to decline issuing a writ of election if a vacancy occurs in a calendar year when a general election for state officers is held.

Takes effect July 1, 2024.
