MS SB2018

Authorizes sheriffs to own, possess, install, operate and monitor electronic or mechanical devices for intercepting wire, oral or other communications, with the same authority previously granted only to the Bureau of Narcotics.

Requires sheriffs to designate deputies in writing who are responsible for the possession, installation, operation and monitoring of such interception devices.

Allows sheriffs to request prosecutors to submit applications for interception orders to courts, following the same procedures and requirements as the Bureau of Narcotics.

Requires sheriffs to submit annual reports to the Mississippi Administrative Office of Courts by January 5 detailing all intercepts conducted, personnel authorized, and costs incurred.

Extends existing wiretapping and electronic surveillance authority under Mississippi Code Section 41-29-501 et seq. to county sheriffs, effective July 1, 2024.
