Senate Bill 2596 Summary

• Converts four restitution centers (Greenwood, Flowood, Hinds County, and Pascagoula) to post-release reentry centers for eligible individuals upon release from incarceration with a maximum 90-day stay.

• Requires Department of Corrections to provide reentry services including counseling, housing assistance, employment training, education, healthcare, substance abuse treatment, and cognitive behavioral programs at post-release reentry centers.

• Repeals sections 99-37-19 and 99-37-21 authorizing county/municipal restitution centers and cooperation between Department of Public Welfare and Department of Corrections for restitution center operations.

• Brings forward multiple Mississippi Code sections (25-3-25, 45-33-27, 45-33-35, 47-5-10, 47-5-26, 47-5-110, 47-5-194, 47-5-1207, 47-7-37) related to sheriff compensation, sex offender registration, Department of Corrections functions, and probation violation procedures for possible amendment.
