MS SB2607

Creates a misdemeanor offense for parents, legal guardians, or custodians who willfully enroll a child in Mississippi public schools without establishing domicile in the state and district.

Punishment upon conviction includes a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment for up to 30 days, plus mandatory expulsion of the child whose enrollment was the basis of the conviction.

Requires school departments, school districts, and school employees to notify law enforcement of any student enrolled in violation of this section.

Defines "domicile" as the place where a person physically resides with the intention of remaining there indefinitely or returning there permanently when temporarily absent.

Takes effect July 1, 2024.
