Senate Bill 2632 Summary

• Sheriff elections become nonpartisan; candidates cannot campaign or qualify based on party affiliation, and political parties are prohibited from fundraising, contributing to, or endorsing sheriff candidates.

• Candidates for sheriff must file intent to run with the circuit clerk 60 days before the general election and pay a $100.00 filing fee.

• Sheriff candidate names appear on ballots in a separate nonpartisan section, listed alphabetically with no party affiliation shown.

• If no sheriff candidate receives a majority of votes in the general election, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff election held three weeks later.

• Effective July 1, 2025; amends Mississippi Code sections related to sheriff eligibility, voter roll maintenance, primary elections, and candidate filing procedures.
