Kratom (mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine), including its salts, isomers, sulfates, free acids, and derivatives, would be added to Schedule III of Mississippi's Uniform Controlled Substances Act.

Schedule III classification places kratom alongside substances like ketamine, anabolic steroids, buprenorphine, and certain codeine preparations that have moderate to low potential for dependence.

Possession, distribution, and sale of kratom would become subject to the same criminal penalties and regulatory controls as other Schedule III controlled substances in Mississippi.

The bill amends Section 41-29-117 of the Mississippi Code of 1972 by adding a new subsection (j) specifically for kratom.

Effective date is July 1, 2026.
