Major Gist began his career in 1992 at Tishomingo County Sheriff's Department, later serving with Mississippi Department of Transportation Law Enforcement and Mississippi Public Service Commission

Promoted to Captain in 2014 and to Major in 2021, when he took command of Special Operations at MDOT Law Enforcement

Born January 5, 1967, in Würzburg, Germany, to a military family; graduated from Iuka High School in 1985 and the Mississippi Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1992
