Candidates for sheriff must be certified law enforcement officers by the Mississippi Board on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Training with at least 10 years of law enforcement service at the time of election

Sheriffs elected prior to July 1, 2026, are exempt from the new certification and experience requirements

Current law already requires sheriffs without prior law enforcement experience to complete training at the Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers' Training Academy at county expense within one year of taking office

The bill amends Section 19-25-3 of the Mississippi Code and takes effect July 1, 2026
