Delta State University celebrates its centennial, having been founded when Mississippi Senate Bill 263 was signed on April 9, 1924, with the institution officially opening on September 15, 1925, to 97 students and 11 faculty members

The institution evolved from Delta State Teachers College (1924) to Delta State College (1955) to Delta State University (1974), adding a graduate program in 1965

Delta State currently serves nearly 2,700 students from most U.S. states and more than 35 countries, offering programs in business, arts, sciences, nursing, education, aviation, music, and geospatial information

The university's athletic programs have won 14 national championships, including six in women's basketball, six in swimming and diving, one in baseball, and one in football

Delta State has played a significant role in regional and national history, including hosting the first announcement of the Marshall Plan by Under-Secretary of State Dean Acheson on May 8, 1947, and helping establish the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area designated by Congress in 2009
