Federal employees and agents not designated as Montana peace officers must notify the county sheriff before making any arrest, search, or seizure in that county

Notification exception applies when the target is a sheriff's office employee, elected county/state officer, or has close connections to the sheriff that could compromise the operation

When sheriff notification is exempted, federal agents must instead provide notice to the Montana Attorney General

Stated purposes include ensuring federal-local law enforcement cooperation, officer safety through event deconfliction, and providing federal agents with local expertise

Effective immediately upon passage and approval; to be codified under Title 44 of Montana law
