New legislators first elected or appointed on or after July 1, 2025, who are not already members of a public retirement system must enroll in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) defined contribution plan

Legislators who are inactive or retired members of defined benefit retirement systems and first take office on or after July 1, 2025, may either return to their previous system or join the PERS defined contribution plan

Current legislators and those taking office before June 30, 2025, retain existing options to participate in various public retirement systems

Active members of public retirement systems who become legislators may continue participation in their current system by filing an irrevocable written election within 90 days of taking office
