Removes the one-year creditable service requirement for firefighters and rescue squad workers to qualify for disability retirement benefits under the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System (LGERS).

Allows firefighters (eligible firemen as defined in G.S. 58-86-25) and rescue squad workers (as defined in G.S. 58-86-30) who become incapacitated due to injuries incurred in the line of duty to receive disability retirement benefits without the standard five-year service requirement.

Combines the separate disability provisions for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and rescue squad workers into a single provision applicable to all three categories.

Effective date: July 1, 2012.
