HB 253 Summary

• Permits home schooled students to participate in interscholastic athletic activities at public schools, effective 2011-2012 school year.

• Home schooled students must meet residency requirements and participate only at the school to which they would be assigned if enrolled in public school.

• Home schooled student athletes must comply with all rules and regulations of the local and State Board of Education, including academic eligibility standards, behavior, and performance requirements for enrolled students.

• Home schooled students must demonstrate academic progress through a method of evaluation agreed upon by the parent and school principal, and must register with the school before the season begins.

• Home schooled student athletes must pay participation fees and purchase supplemental insurance required of or reasonably established for public school athletes.
