Adds a new Class I felony offense for assaulting law enforcement officers (police, probation, or parole officers) while they are performing official duties and inflicting physical injury on the officer.

Creates a separate Class I felony for assaulting detention facility employees while they are performing their duties and inflicting physical injury on the employee.

Defines "physical injury" for these offenses to include cuts, scrapes, bruises, or other physical injury that does not constitute serious injury.

Specifies that these penalties apply only when the assault is not covered under another law provision that provides greater punishment.

Becomes effective December 1, 2011 for offenses committed on or after that date.
