H831 Summary: Multiple Birth Sibling Classroom Placement

• Parents or guardians of multiple birth siblings (twins, triplets, etc.) enrolled in the same grade and school may request in writing that siblings be placed in the same or separate classrooms.

• Requests must be submitted no later than five days before the first day of school or five days after enrollment if students enter during the school year.

• Schools must honor parent placement requests except when doing so would require adding an additional class to the grade level.

• After the first grading period, principals may override parent requests if the placement is determined to be disruptive to the school; parents may appeal this decision while siblings remain in the parent-chosen classroom.

• The law takes effect beginning with the 2011-2012 school year and does not affect schools' ability to remove students from classrooms under existing discipline policies.
