Session Law 2011-354 (Senate Bill 726)

• Adds § 115C-366.3 to allow parents of multiple birth siblings (twins, triplets, etc.) to request a consultative meeting with the school principal regarding classroom placement at the same grade level and school.

• Parents may request siblings be placed in the same classroom or separate classrooms, with requests due no later than five days before the school year begins or five days after enrollment if students enroll after the school year commences.

• Schools must provide the classroom placement requested by parents, except when compliance would require adding an additional class to the grade level.

• Schools may override the parent's requested placement if, after the first grading period, the principal determines in consultation with teachers that the placement is disruptive to the school.

• Effective beginning with the 2011-2012 school year; does not affect existing school discipline policies or authority to remove students from classrooms.
