Removes the one-year creditable service requirement for firefighters and rescue squad workers to qualify for disability retirement benefits under the Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System when injured in the line of duty.

Extends eligibility to firefighters (as defined in G.S. 58-86-25) and rescue squad workers (as defined in G.S. 58-86-30) who become incapacitated due to injuries sustained during actual performance of duty, regardless of years of service.

Maintains all other disability retirement requirements, including medical board certification that the incapacity is permanent, occurred during active employment, and is likely to be permanent.

Applies to law enforcement officers, eligible firefighters, and eligible rescue squad workers injured in the line of duty.

Becomes effective July 1, 2012.
