Conibear type traps with inside jaw spread greater than 5.5 inches and no more than 7.5 inches may be set on dry land only with bait in approved enclosures or at elevated positions of at least 4 feet above ground.

Conibear type traps set without enclosure and without bait may be set on dry land with restrictions: on public lands traps must be 8 inches or less above ground or elevated 5+ feet; on private lands traps cannot exceed 6.5 inches or larger traps require buildings/structures or depredation permits.

Larger Conibear type traps with inside jaw spread greater than 7.5 inches but no larger than 26 inches in width and 12 inches in height may only be set in water where beaver and otter may be lawfully trapped.

Bucket sets using Conibear traps are prohibited.

All individuals licensed to trap after October 1, 2014 must complete a trapper education course approved by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission; the Wildlife Resources Commission must adopt rules requiring reporting of domestic animals taken by trapping.
