Leo Mercer, born March 20, 1926, in Chadbourn, North Carolina, served in the U.S. Navy starting in 1943 and died December 26, 2013, at age 87.

Mercer served as Chadbourn postmaster from 1962 to 1984 and had a 33-year career with the United States Postal Service, earning North Carolina Postmaster of the Year in 1978.

Mercer served two terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives between 1989 and 1992 and held various municipal positions including Mayor of Chadbourn and member of the Columbus County Board of Education.

Mercer also served five years as special assistant to Governor James B. Hunt, Jr., and received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2012, North Carolina's highest honor.

The General Assembly honors Mercer's memory and service to his community, state, and nation, with the Secretary of State to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to his family.
