• Removes mandatory opening and closing date restrictions for six specific school administrative units: Camden County, Currituck County, Edenton-Chowan, Elizabeth City-Pasquotank, Perquimans County, and Tyrrell County.

• Eliminates the requirement that school opening dates be no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and closing dates no later than the Friday closest to June 11 for these designated districts.

• Requires schools to grant excused absences to students absent before September 1 due to family vacations and provide opportunities for students to make up any missed tests or work.

• Effective beginning with the 2015-2016 school year.
