General Assembly honors the memory of Dean Edwards Smith, former head basketball coach at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, for his contributions to basketball, higher education, and social justice

Recognizes Smith's 36-year coaching tenure with 879-254 record, 2 NCAA championships (1982, 1993), 11 Final Four appearances, and 27 consecutive NCAA tournament bids

Acknowledges Smith's role in integrating UNC athletics by recruiting Charles Scott as the first African-American scholarship player and his commitment to civil rights, including integrating a segregated Chapel Hill restaurant in the late 1960s

Extends condolences to Smith's family and directs the Secretary of State to send certified copies of the resolution to his surviving spouse, five children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild

Resolution effective upon ratification on June 11, 2015
