Senate Bill 624 Summary

• Authorizes employees and volunteers of private schools to carry firearms, tear gas, or stun guns on school property when written authorization is obtained from the school board of trustees or administrative director.

• Requires authorized private school personnel to possess a valid concealed handgun permit and complete a minimum of 8 hours of annual firearms safety training with a certified National Rifle Association instructor or equivalent.

• Mandates private schools that allow weapons on premises to adopt and maintain written standard operating procedures and distribute copies to parents annually.

• Permits individuals with valid concealed handgun permits to carry concealed handguns in places of religious worship located on educational property while attending worship services, funerals, weddings, and other religious functions.

• Becomes effective December 1, 2015.
