Born October 8, 1924, in Washington, North Carolina; died April 11, 2016, at age 91.

Served as member of North Carolina State Senate during 1963, 1965, 1967, and 1969 sessions; chaired or vice-chaired several standing committees including Courts and Judicial Districts and Appropriations.

Graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with B.S. degree in 1948 and Juris Doctorate from UNC Law School in 1951; practiced civil law in Goldsboro for over 50 years.

Served in United States Coast Guard from 1942-1946 during World War II, including 18 months aboard U.S.S. Wakefield in Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific theaters.

Received numerous honors including John J. Parker Award for Jurisprudence, Distinguished Alumnus Award from UNC Chapel Hill, and Christopher Crittenden Memorial Award for contributions to North Carolina history preservation.
