General Assembly honors the life and memory of John H. Kerr, III, a former lawyer and legislator who served in the House of Representatives from 1987 to 1992 and in the Senate from 1993 to 2008.

Kerr served as cochair of Finance and Revenue Laws Study Committees, vice-chair of the Select Committee on Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Military Affairs, and member of multiple other committees during his Senate tenure.

Kerr practiced law for over 50 years in Goldsboro, primarily in civil and corporate law, and served in leadership roles in bar associations across Wayne County, the Eighth Judicial District, and the State.

Kerr earned a bachelor's degree from UNC Chapel Hill in 1958 and a juris doctorate with honors from UNC Law School in 1961, served in the North Carolina National Guard from 1954 to 1962, and was active in civic organizations including the Jaycees, Rotary Club, and multiple community boards.

Secretary of State shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to Kerr's family; resolution became effective upon ratification on June 9, 2016.
