Allows local boards of education to schedule school opening dates to coincide with community college opening dates in their area, provided the opening date is no earlier than August 15.

Maintains existing requirement that opening dates be no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26, except where good cause is shown for August 19, or under the new community college alignment provision.

Preserves existing closing date requirement of no later than the Friday closest to June 11, with flexibility to adjust if necessary to meet minimum instructional days or time requirements.

Applies to schools beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
