Changes G.S. 160A-288 to allow law enforcement agencies to assist each other unless specifically prohibited or limited by local ordinance, replacing the previous requirement to follow rules and policies.

Officers temporarily assigned to assist another agency retain their own agency's jurisdiction, powers, rights, and immunities while also gaining the same authority as officers of the requesting agency.

Assisted officers remain under their home agency's operational and administrative control, including pay and benefits, while being subject to lawful commands from the requesting agency's supervisors.

Makes identical changes to G.S. 160A-288.2 regarding assistance between local and State law enforcement agencies.

Changes terminology from "sheriff's department" to "sheriff's office" for technical accuracy.
