Department of Public Instruction, in coordination with the Department of Transportation, shall study the advisability of adding lane departure training to the driver education curriculum's actual driving portion.

Study shall examine teaching students to safely handle situations where vehicle wheels leave the paved road onto the shoulder and safely return to the road, including reviewing fatalities, injuries, and overcorrection data.

Study must assess practicality of finding safe locations to practice this maneuver and evaluate liability risks for instructors, schools, school administrative units, and the state.

Department must include at least one representative each from the North Carolina Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association, a private driving school instructor, and a certified public school driver education teacher in the study.

Department of Public Instruction shall report findings, recommendations, and any legislative proposals to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by March 1, 2018.
