Creates an exception to North Carolina's conflict of interest law (G.S. 14-234) to allow local boards of education to employ the spouse of a superintendent of that local school administrative unit.

The exception applies only when the employment relationship has been approved by the board in an open session meeting.

The board must have adopted a policy regarding such employment as provided in G.S. 115C-47(17a).

This exception is added as a new subdivision (3a) to the existing exceptions in the conflict of interest statute.

The act became effective upon ratification on June 22, 2018.
