H845 - NC Healthy Schools Act of 2017

• Requires all elementary and secondary public schools, charter schools, and nonpublic schools with 50+ students to establish and exclusively use environmentally sensitive green cleaning products when economically feasible.

• Schools that cannot feasibly adopt a green cleaning policy must provide annual written notification to the Department of Public Instruction explaining that implementation would increase cleaning costs.

• Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Public Instruction, State Board of Education, and stakeholder panel must establish and annually update guidelines and specifications for environmentally sensitive cleaning products, posted on DPI website.

• DPI shall disseminate guidelines and specifications to local school boards, charter schools, and nonpublic schools; local boards must immediately distribute to schools in their jurisdiction with ongoing assistance provided.

• Schools may deplete existing cleaning supply stocks before implementing new requirements in the following school year; no state funding is appropriated for implementation; bill becomes effective for the 2017-2018 school year.
