Session Law 2018-37: Senate Bill 125 Summary

• Local boards of education are encouraged to adopt student attendance recognition programs to promote school attendance and class participation as part of academic achievement.

• Students serving as legislative pages or Governor's pages shall be eligible to participate in attendance recognition programs, with their service-related absences excluded from attendance records.

• The definition of "child" for wartime veterans scholarship eligibility (Class II and Class III) is expanded to include any person meeting specified requirements and defined as a child under 37 U.S.C. § 401.

• The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs must report to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on General Government by March 30, 2019, documenting the number of Class II and Class III scholarship applicants and those newly eligible under this act.

• The act became effective upon enactment on June 22, 2018, with the school attendance provisions applicable beginning the 2018-2019 school year.
