Requires mandatory crisis intervention training for all law enforcement officers at entry level employment to help officers interact with people suffering from mental illness and de-escalate crisis situations.

Requires mandatory de-escalation training for all law enforcement officers at entry level employment, defined as specialized training in techniques to diffuse potentially dangerous or threatening situations to prevent harm and achieve successful outcomes.

Applies de-escalation and crisis intervention training requirements to criminal justice officers under G.S. 17C-6 and justice officers under G.S. 17E-4.

Becomes effective October 1, 2017.
