Senate Bill 62 - Summary

• Requires the Veterans' Affairs Commission to adopt a comprehensive strategic plan by November 1, 2018, to enhance benefits for veterans and their dependents in North Carolina.

• Strategic plan must address improving accessibility of health, education, training, counseling, financial, and burial benefits; increasing veteran satisfaction with services; educating and empowering veterans through outreach; and other related enhancement topics.

• Commission must update the plan every four years and conduct annual reviews of state performance, reporting results annually to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on General Government beginning by November 1, 2019.

• Directs the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to study methods for documenting, collecting, and analyzing outcomes for military veterans and their families across state programs, with findings due to appropriations subcommittee chairs by December 1, 2017.

• Bill became effective upon ratification on May 31, 2017.
