MaryAnn Black was born October 3, 1943, in Manhattan, New York, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in English from Benedict College and a master's degree in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Worked over 30 years as a clinical social worker in Durham and served as Associate Vice President for Community Relations for the Duke University Health System.

Served on the Durham County Board of Commissioners from 1990 to 2002, including as chair from 1996 to 2002, and was appointed to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2017 to represent District 29 until 2020.

Received numerous awards including "Social Worker of the Year" from the State of North Carolina and National Association of Social Workers in 1994, and was the first female chair of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce Board.

Passed away on March 25, 2020, at age 76; the General Assembly honors her memory and extends sympathy to her surviving family members.
