State Board of Education must adopt rules excusing absences for students attending legislative events or visiting the North Carolina General Assembly, including service as a legislative page.

School principals must authorize excused absences for attending legislative events or visiting the General Assembly for any purpose.

Students with excused absences for legislative events must be given the opportunity to make up any tests or work missed due to the absence.

Students with absences for legislative page service or excused absences under this law remain eligible for participation in school attendance recognition programs, with such absences not counted against their attendance record.

The act is effective upon becoming law and applies beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.
