McDowell County Board of Education members shall be elected from elementary school attendance zones rather than at-large or previous district arrangements.

Six elementary schools each elect one member: Old Fort (beginning 2020), Pleasant Gardens (beginning 2022), North Cove (beginning 2020), Nebo (beginning 2022), West Marion (beginning 2020), and Glenwood (beginning 2022).

Two members elected in 2020 and one member elected in 2022 shall come from either Eastfield Global Magnet School or Marion Elementary School attendance zones.

Candidates must reside in their respective attendance zone to be eligible for election, but all qualified county voters may vote on all board seats.

Vacancies must be filled by appointees who reside in the same attendance zone as the departing member; school name changes do not affect the corresponding attendance zone designation.
