Schools identified as low-performing under G.S. 115C-105.37 are exempt from standard opening and closing date requirements for three consecutive school years following their identification.

Low-performing schools may set opening dates as early as the Monday closest to August 19 instead of the standard Monday closest to August 26.

The exemption applies only to schools designated as low-performing by the State Board of Education and lasts for the year of identification plus three additional consecutive school years.

Existing exemptions for year-round schools and schools with modified calendars designated in 2003-2004 remain unchanged.

The act becomes effective with the 2019-2020 school year.
