Health care providers licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina are authorized to report suspected threats of violence communicated by minors during treatment.

Providers must notify the law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over the location where the threat exists or is directed.

If a threat occurred in or targets a school, providers must also notify the school principal or superintendent of the local school administrative unit.

Health care providers making good faith notifications under this law have immunity from civil and criminal liability.

The act becomes effective October 1, 2019, and applies to information received by health care providers on or after that date.
