Greene County Board of Education and Pitt County Board of Education may determine their own school opening and closing dates for the 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 school years, notwithstanding existing state calendar requirements.

Both boards must hold two public hearings before implementing alternative calendars: one to determine whether to depart from state requirements and a second to receive input on the specific dates selected.

Greene County and Pitt County boards must report to the Department of Public Instruction by October 1, 2022, on implementation effects including impacts on student achievement and recommendations for modifying or expanding the calendar flexibility.

The Department of Public Instruction shall evaluate the reports and submit an aggregated report to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by November 15, 2022.

The act becomes effective upon passage and applies only to the three specified school years.
