Allows specified local school boards to align school calendars with community college calendars in their service areas, notwithstanding standard state opening and closing date requirements.

Applies only to seven school systems: Alleghany County Schools, Ashe County Schools, Elkin City Schools, Mount Airy City Schools, Surry County Schools, Watauga County Schools, and Wilkes County Schools.

Effective beginning with the 2019-2020 school year when the act becomes law.

Does not affect schools operating under modified calendars or the existing "good cause" waiver process that allows earlier August 19 opening dates for counties with eight or more school closure days in four of the last 10 years.
