Allows specified local school administrative units to start the school year earlier than the state-mandated Monday closest to August 26 if their calendar aligns with the opening date of a community college serving their county.

Permits school calendars to align fall and spring semesters with local community colleges to facilitate dual enrollment and support workforce development initiatives.

Applies only to seven school districts: Chatham County Schools, Edgecombe County Schools, Elkin City Schools, Martin County Schools, Mt. Airy City Schools, Surry County Schools, and Union County Public Schools.

Maintains existing requirements that school closing dates remain no later than the Friday closest to June 11 and preserves flexibility for schools with modified or year-round calendars.

Effective when enacted and applies beginning with the 2021-2022 school year.
