Sheriffs must waive the firearms safety and training course requirement for permittees who renew their concealed carry permit within 60 days after expiration.

Permittees renewing between 61-180 days after expiration may have the course requirement waived if they complete a refresher course on North Carolina firearms laws certified or sponsored by approved entities and submit documentation to the sheriff.

The waiver does not extend the expiration date of the permit.

The act became effective October 1, 2021, and applies to renewal applications submitted on or after that date.
