The Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Justice and Public Safety shall conduct a study on the preservation of biological evidence in North Carolina.

The study must analyze how each county collects, preserves, and destroys biological evidence, including storage locations, chain of custody procedures, preservation duration, and associated costs.

The Committee shall conduct a comparative analysis of how the federal government and other states preserve, store, and destroy biological evidence.

The Committee shall analyze best methods for storing and preserving biological evidence, including optimal preservation duration, with input from State and local agencies on practical considerations such as storage space, manpower, and costs.

The Committee shall report its findings and any proposed legislation to the 2022 Regular Session of the General Assembly.
