H 717 - Abolish Office of County Coroner

• Repeals Chapter 152 of the General Statutes, which governs the office of county coroner in North Carolina.

• Transfers coroner duties to clerk of court and sheriff in counties where the office is abolished or vacant, including process service and execution authority.

• Removes references to coroner from 28 statutes covering judicial procedures, law enforcement, official bonds, property taxes, and body disposition authority.

• Allows current coroners to serve until their terms expire; upon expiration of each coroner's term, that county's coroner office is abolished permanently.

• Effective upon passage of the act.
