Board of Code-enforcement Officials shall develop and administer a State Building Code Permit Technician certification program based on the North Carolina State Building Code, administrative procedures, and permit administration topics.

Applicants must pass an examination prescribed by the Board; qualified Building Inspector certificate holders may receive a certificate waiver without examination if in good standing.

Certificate holders must renew annually by July 1st and complete no more than three credit hours of Board-approved continuing education per year to maintain certification.

Initial certification fees capped at $20.00, renewal certification fees capped at $10.00, and a $4.00 late renewal fee applies for renewals after July 1st each year.

Out-of-state permit technicians certified by similar boards or the International Code Council may receive certificates without examination; their certificates expire after one year unless they complete a required short course on the North Carolina State Building Code.
