Department of Public Instruction's Office of Learning Recovery and Acceleration, in collaboration with the North Carolina Policy Collaboratory, must study and report on ways to increase teacher diversity by March 15, 2024.

Report must survey the Call Me MiSTER program at Western Carolina University and the Marathon Teaching Institute at North Carolina Central University, plus effective programs in other states, and their impact on socioeconomic and geographic diversity.

Report must include recommendations to increase enrollment of diverse candidates in educator preparation programs and employment as teachers, including expanding existing programs, establishing new programs, and developing a statewide program.

$150,000 in nonrecurring funds appropriated from the General Fund to the Department of Public Instruction for the 2023-2024 fiscal year to conduct the study.

Act becomes effective July 1, 2023.
