Senate Bill 360 Summary

• Allows verification forms for sex offenders serving sentences over 24 months to be delivered to the Division of Prisons instead of by mail, effective August 1, 2023.

• Permits sex offenders to petition for termination of registration requirements after 10 years regardless of current residence if the original offense occurred in North Carolina, effective August 1, 2023.

• Removes the 72-hour time constraint for law enforcement to provide written information to crime victims and eliminates the 72-hour reporting requirement for compensation claims eligibility.

• Expands rental protections to include victims of attempted homicide and household members of homicide victims, allowing early termination of leases with proper documentation, effective August 1, 2023.

• Creates a privileged communication protection for homicide victim advocates at victim assistance centers and allows magistrate ex parte domestic violence orders to be extended with district court judge approval, effective October 1, 2023.
