Jerry Wayne Tillman was born October 10, 1940, in Chatham County and died February 4, 2023, at age 82.

Tillman served in the North Carolina State Senate from 2003 to 2020, holding leadership positions including Republican Caucus Leader and Senate Majority Whip.

Tillman chaired the Appropriations Committee on Education/Higher Education, Education/Higher Education Committee, and Finance Committee, and served on Agriculture, Commerce, Judiciary, Transportation, and Workforce and Economic Development committees.

Before his Senate service, Tillman earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education and school administration, served as an educator and principal in Randolph County Schools, and was appointed to the North Carolina Board of Transportation after retiring from the Senate.

The Senate extends its highest appreciation of Tillman as a citizen and public servant and extends sympathy to his family, with the Principal Clerk to transmit a copy of the resolution to his family.
