John held three degrees from UNC Chapel Hill and had extensive legal career including work at Greensboro Legal Aid Foundation, Assistant and Chief Assistant District Attorney, and litigation attorney

Served across all three branches of NC government as Director of the State Crime Lab, Acting Commissioner of the NC Department of Motor Vehicles, and Judge on the NC Court of Appeals

Received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Jim Hunt and the "Fifty Years of Service" award from the NC State Bar

Governor Josh Stein ordered flags lowered to half-staff on January 30, 2025; resolution directs the Principal Clerk to transmit a copy to John's family
